Q. Does my dissertation or thesis qualify?

A. Because of the diversity of academic systems in different countries and fields of scholarship, we do not specify which degree titles are acceptable for inclusion, but rather offer the following guideline:

The listing includes dissertations submitted as requirement for the degree which constitutes the commonly accepted minimum qualification for holding a regular, full-fledged teaching or research position at a university or institute in the particular country and field where you work. An MA in History in the United States, for example, would not qualify since, though you may be able to work as a research assistant or teaching assistant, it would be exceptional for a university-level history department to hire someone without a PhD for a regular teaching position (such as Lecturer, Asst. Professor).

We do not wish to deny the significance of the contribution to scholarship made by other theses. We set this guideline to make the project coherent and manageable (and any guideline would leave something worthwhile out).

It is up to you to judge whether your thesis meets this guideline, bearing in mind that to submit your information is of course a public statement that you believe it does.

Q. Can one submit information on a thesis that has not yet been submitted/defended/approved?

A. The Dissertation Listing on «CESWW» includes only dissertations that have been submitted and approved. Once it is included, it becomes a permanent entry. It does occasionally happen that the dissertation is not approved, and not infrequently the title and other aspects (e.g., no. of pages) change before it is completed. The year of completion is also sometimes later than one anticipates. It would of course be embarrassing to have a permanent record of the thesis that was not approved, posted as if it were.

Therefore, please submit your information once the thesis is approved. Make a note to yourself to be sure you don't forget.

Q. Can one indicate a Subject Heading that is not included in the list?

A. If you feel that the existing set of subject headings ("Anthropology, Archaeology, etc.") omits your field, feel free to suggest additions to the list. They should of course be major disciplines and fields which might correspond to a university department.

Q. Can one indicate Keywords that are not in the Subject Keyword Index?

A. The Subject Keyword Index is derived from the keywords applied to dissertations which people have previously submitted. Any appropriate new keywords will be added from your submission. We ask only that you try to spell things in a way that will be consistent with common practice, to ensure that a given keyword appears only once in the index with all the relevant entries.
