Posted: 17 Jun 2002

Hello,

Established ca. 1930s with the name "Inkilap ve Aka", Inkilap Kitabevi is
one of the mainstream publishing houses of Turkey. In 2002 Inkilap has
started an initiative which targets to supply the most up-to-date selection
of books printed in Turkey, related to research areas such as: TURCICA,
ISLAMICA, ARMENICA, JUDAICA, HELLENICA, CONSTANTINOPLE, BALKANICA, MIDDLE
EAST, CAUCASUS, CENTRAL ASIA, TURKISH & ISLAMIC ARTS, ARCHAEOLOGY...

As part of this initiative, Inkilap listed a comprehensive selection at
abebooks.com site:

http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BooksBrowse?vendorclientid=1042608

Inkilap targets to develop library acquisition relationships further by
signing yearly "blanket" orders agreements. Thanks to 70+ years of editorial
experience, Inkilap is able to carefully follow new books of academic /
collectible value and distinguish them from trade books of common usage.

Inkilap has strong trade relations with suppliers of all kind, which allow
to fulfill blanket orders with less process time and less stock / shipment
costs. Depending on customers' specifications, we can also insert AACR2
library data into the books shipped, to help librarians for cataloguing.

Should you have any question about book searches, book ordering,
acquisitions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Reza Sekerci

#1. CAUCASUS: WAR AND PEACE New World Disorder in Caucasia
Edited by MEHMET TUTUNCU Haarlem 1998, SOTA, 224 pages.
Price 30 US Dollars

Introduction:

The Caucasus situated on the frontiers of Europe and Asia is a crossroad and
gateway between Cultures and Civilizations, (between Europe and Asia, Islam and
Christianity, Turks, Iranians and Slavs.) In the famous Caucasus Mountains,
where Prometheus was punished and chained to the rocks because he had stolen
the fire from the gods to hand to mankind, seems to be the most fertile ground
for ethnic violence. The war between Armenia and Azerbaijan about Nagorno
Karabagh, The Abkhazian-Georgian conflict and the Chechen-Russian War. These
wars cost more than 100,000 lives and resulted in millions of refugees.

 - What are the causes of conflicts in the Caucasus? Is this an area where
   there will never be peace?
 - What is the role of international organizations and the media in these
   conflicts?
 - Could methods of conflict resolution help make the region less tense?
 - What is the role of millions of women, who suffer the most from wars that
are fought mainly by male heroes?

This book gives answers to these and other relevant questions. The authors are
all experts and specialists of the region or representatives from the
countries involved in conflicts. It is a book that it should not be missed both by
experts as laymen who are interested in the region.

#2. Paul B. Henze, Turkey and Ataturk's Legacy

Turkey and Ataturk's Legacy
Turkey's Political evolution, U.S. Relations and Prospects for the 21st.
Century
PAUL B. HENZE

(with a foreword by Zbigniew Brzezinski)
Haarlem, SOTA, 186 p.
ISBN: 90-804409-1-4
Price: 25 USDollars

Description:

Turkey's Political Evolution, Turkish-US Relations and Prospects
for the 21st. Century

Considering the prominent role Turkey has played in Free World security
strategy since 1947 and the significance of the Turkish experience for
developing countries, the evolution of modern Turkey is less well understood
the world than it should be. The systematic progress of the Turkish Republic
toward modern, democratic nationhood is in many ways unique. With the collapse
of the Soviet Union, Turkey became a mentor and model for its successor
states.

This monograph is an attempt to tell in relatively brief form how the Turkish
Republic was created, to evaluate its history, especially its close and
mutually beneficial relationship with the United States, and to look ahead
into the 21st century.

This book recounts how the Turkish Republic came into being, primarily as a
result of the vision and determination of one of the most remarkable
leaders of the 20th century, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The second chapter goes
back into history and traces the evolution of relations between the United
States and the Ottoman Empire from the earliest period of the American
Republic through World War I, the Ataturk era, and World War II. Chapter three
describes the evolution to multi-party democracy and Turkey's incorporation
into the Western defense system, with resultant gains, strains, frustrations,
economic progress and advances in democracy into the 1970s. The fourth chapter
describes the course of the crisis in Turkish-American relations that came to
a head in the mid-1970s. The fifth chapter deals with the difficulties Turkey
fell into as its democratic system became deadlocked while the country became
the target of a massive Soviet-supported destabilization effort. The longest
section of the monograph is devoted to the Opal Era because Ozal's impact has
been greater and more fundamental than that of any Turkish leader since
Ataturk.

#3. Dr. Necip Hablemitoglu Carlik Rusyasi'nda Turk Kongreleri
(1905-1917) Turkic Congresses in Tsars Russia (1905-1917), Ankara 1997,
317s. USDollars 30

Excellent unique reproduction of documents and photos, unique material about
the situation of the Russian Turkish Peoples and their political struggle at
the beginning of 20th. century.

#4. CAUCASUS and an unholy alliance edited by Antero Leitzinger
   ISBN 952-9752-16-4
   Price: 30 Us Dollars

   Publisher: Kirja-Leitzinger (Leitzinger Books)
Print: Tummavuoren kirjapaino, Vantaa (Finland) 1997

The book "CAUCASUS and an unholy alliance" (348 pages in A5 size, with soft
covers) contains articles by both Caucasian statesmen and foreign researchers
on the history and politics of the four Caucasian states (Georgia, Armenia,
Azerbaijan and Chechenia). The articles are grouped into four main groups,
roughly 50 to 120 pages each:

1) articles on Armenia and Azerbaijan, tracing back the Karabagh conflict to
Russian provocations in earlier times;

2) articles on Georgia, focusing on the Abkhazian War and the destroying of
democracy by current president Shevardnadze;

3) articles on Chechenia, comparing the conquests in the 19th century and the
continuous fighting for freedom ever since with the Chechen War 1994-1996;

4) articles introducing the main players around the Caucasus: Russia, Iran,
Turkey and the West, with their vexed interests.

The main idea of the book is to provide information from different sources
leading to similar conclusions - by comparing what has happened in all these
countries during the last 10 years, and comparing contemporary politics with
19th century history, the common denominators, now and then, in Georgia as
well as in Azerbaijan, may be more easily detected than if concentrating on
each issue separately. The similarities of Russia's 19th century colonial
policy and modern behavior, as well as between certain tragic incidents
(a. o. the so-called "ethnic conflicts") in different parts of the region
can not be disregarded. What makes a difference between the fates of let
us say Armenia and Chechenia, is nothing but their different level of
resistance.

As the editor and several contributors are Finnish experts on Caucasian
affairs, certain analogies to the renaissance of traditional Russian
(imperial) policy in the 1930s are natural. The name of the book projects
the fear, that Russia and the West are once again committed into an unholy
alliance - this time together with Iranian-style Islamism - and have
abandoned the principles of justice and the right to self-determination of
Caucasian nations.
