The Guide to Scholars of Central Asia will soon appear in its second, greatly expanded edition. The first edition (1995) went through two printings and is currently out-of-print as we prepare to issue the new edition in the coming months. The new edition will include around 3,000 scholars from throughout the world. The Guide's purpose is to promote contacts and communication among scholars in this field. Included are scholars in the Social Sciences and Humanities who have made some contribution to the study of Central Asia (as a minimum for inclusion one must have at least 3 items of bibliography: articles, books and/or a doctoral dissertation). For these purposes, Central Asia is defined as including the Central Asian states of Kazakstan, Kirghizstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, and closely related areas, such as the Volga Basin, the Caucasus, Southwest Siberia, East Turkistan, Mongolia, North Afghanistan, and Northeast Iran. All time periods are included.
If you would like your information to be included in the new edition of the Guide, submit your information with the Guide Questionnaire.
If you would like to purchase the new edition of the Guide, please send
us a note and we will send you price and ordering information when it becomes
available later this year: <CESWW
fas.harvard.edu>.
We would be very grateful also for your assistance in ensuring that the Guide to Scholars is as complete as possible. On a temporary basis, we provide here the List of Scholars whose data we have for the second edition (to be posted shortly) and the Thematic Index from the first edition. Your assitance in filling any gaps will be much appreciated -- please send the contact information (ideally, the e-mail address) for any scholars who should be included.
Note that the new edition of the Guide to Scholars is expected to be made available on-line, enabling users to search the database for scholars with expertise of interest, and to obtain their contact information and details of their scholarly work.
